Frequently Asked Questions

How does IBAN validation work?

An IBAN is checked with the ISO 13616 mod-97 algorithm: the first four characters move to the end, letters convert to numbers (A=10 … Z=35), and the resulting number must leave remainder 1 when divided by 97. The tool also checks the country code and the exact length expected for that country.

What is the BBAN?

Everything after the country code and two check digits is the BBAN — the domestic account identifier. Its first characters are usually the bank (and sometimes branch/sort) code, followed by the account number. The breakdown panel highlights both parts.

Does a valid IBAN mean the account exists?

No. A valid checksum only proves the IBAN is structurally correct and free of typos. It cannot confirm the account is open or belongs to the person you expect — always confirm payment details through a trusted channel before sending money.

Why do IBAN lengths differ by country?

Each country defines its own BBAN format, so totals range from 15 characters (Norway) to 34. This validator includes the official lengths and bank-code positions for 30+ major IBAN countries.
