Snake Game
Guide the snake to eat food and grow. Avoid walls and yourself!
About Snake Game
Snake began as the 1976 arcade game Blockade, but it became a global phenomenon in 1997 when it shipped on Nokia phones and a generation learned to steer a growing pixel snake with their thumbs. The tension is built into the design: every apple makes you stronger and longer, and every extra segment is one more way to trap yourself.
This version plays on a 20×20 grid. Each apple you eat is worth 1 point, grows the snake by one segment, and — the real challenge — permanently speeds the game up a little, from its starting pace down towards a brisk minimum step time. Your session best is tracked alongside your score. Steering works with the arrow keys or WASD on desktop, and an on-screen direction pad with a pause button is provided for touch screens, so the game plays just as well on a phone.
How to Play Snake Game
Press Start Game (or simply press a direction key) and the snake sets off across the 20×20 board.
Steer with the arrow keys or WASD — or the on-screen arrow pad on touch devices — towards the apple.
Eat the apple to score 1 point and grow one segment longer. A new apple appears somewhere the snake is not.
Every apple makes the snake slightly faster, so the board effectively shrinks as your score climbs.
Hitting a wall or any part of your own body ends the game. Your final score is shown with a Play Again button, and your best score of the session is remembered.

Tips & Tricks
- 💡Hug the walls early: running along the edges keeps the centre open as an escape route once your body starts filling the board.
- 💡Think in rectangles. Loop the snake around the perimeter in a loose circuit and cut inwards only for apples — the pattern scales to almost any length.
- 💡Never chase an apple that sits in a pocket formed by your own body unless you can see the way back out before you go in.
- 💡As the speed rises, queue your turns calmly and early — the game accepts a direction change just ahead of each step, so late double-turns are where most runs die.
Snake Game — Frequently Asked Questions
How does scoring work?+
Each apple is worth exactly 1 point and adds one segment to the snake. There are no bonus items — your score is simply how many apples you ate, and the steadily rising speed is what makes high scores hard.
How much faster does the snake get?+
The step interval starts at 150 milliseconds and shrinks by 3 milliseconds per apple, down to a minimum of 60 milliseconds — roughly two and a half times the starting speed for very long snakes.
Can I play on my phone?+
Yes. A touch direction pad sits under the board, with a pause/play button in its centre. The pad starts the game and steers exactly like the keyboard does.
Is the best score saved?+
Your best score is tracked for the current session only; reloading the page resets it.
