Tangram

Seven pieces, endless silhouettes — the ancient puzzle, faithfully rebuilt.

All 7 tangram pieces start assembled as a square on the right. Drag them onto the grey silhouette, rotate in 45° steps (buttons or double-click a piece), and flip the parallelogram when a shape needs its mirror image. Pieces snap to a fine grid when dropped. Checking samples the shapes point-by-point, so near-perfect fits count.

About Tangram

Tangram is the centuries-old Chinese dissection puzzle: one square cut into seven pieces — two large triangles, one medium triangle, two small triangles, a square and a parallelogram — that can be rearranged into an endless gallery of figures. This digital version keeps the geometry exact: the pieces are the true tangram set, cut from a verified dissection of the 4×4 square, and they begin each round assembled as that original square on the right of the board, just as a physical set would be handed to you.

Six silhouettes are provided — Boat, House, Rocket, Fish, Candle and Cat — plus an unlimited free-play sandbox. Pieces drag smoothly, snap to a fine quarter-unit grid when dropped, rotate in exact 45° steps, and the parallelogram can be flipped, which matters because it is the only chiral tangram piece: some silhouettes are impossible without its mirror image. Solution checking is done by point sampling rather than exact placement matching: the game measures what fraction of the silhouette your pieces cover and what fraction of your pieces lies inside the outline, and compares both against what is geometrically achievable, so any genuinely good arrangement passes — not just one memorised layout.

How to Play Tangram

1

Choose a silhouette (Boat, House, Rocket, Fish, Candle or Cat) or Free Play; the seven pieces start as a square on the right.

2

Drag pieces onto the grey silhouette with the mouse or a finger — they snap to a fine grid when you let go.

3

Click a piece to select it, then rotate it with the ⟳ / ⟲ buttons in 45° steps, or double-click the piece itself to rotate it.

4

Use the Flip button to mirror a piece — essential for the purple parallelogram in many shapes.

5

Press Check My Solution to measure your fit; cover the silhouette and keep pieces inside the outline to solve it.

Tips & Tricks

  • 💡Place the two large triangles first — together they are half the total area and usually form the silhouette's biggest surface.
  • 💡Decide the parallelogram's home early: it is the only piece with slanted 'leaning' edges, and forgetting to flip it is the classic reason a shape will not finish.
  • 💡The square piece most often sits in a neat square corner or notch of the outline — scan for those first.
  • 💡Small triangles fill the leftover corners: if a shape is almost right except for two pointy gaps, the small triangles almost certainly belong there.

Tangram — Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the parallelogram sometimes need flipping?+

The parallelogram is the only tangram piece that is not identical to its mirror image. Some silhouettes contain its mirror form, which no amount of rotation can produce — the Flip button mirrors it, just like turning a physical piece over.

How does the solution check work?+

The game samples thousands of points across the silhouette and across your pieces. It scores what percentage of the silhouette is covered and what percentage of your pieces lies inside the outline, then compares both with the best that is geometrically possible for that target. A genuinely good fit passes — you do not need pixel-perfect placement.

Do I have to use all seven pieces?+

For a silhouette to score as solved, effectively yes: the pieces' combined area is what the coverage score is measured against, so leaving a piece outside the outline hurts the 'pieces inside' score. Free Play, of course, has no rules at all.

What can I build in Free Play?+

Anything the seven pieces allow — letters, animals, abstract patterns. Free Play removes the silhouette and the checker, leaving a pure tangram sandbox with the same drag, rotate and flip controls.
