About Color Matching Game

Color Match is built on the famous Stroop effect, demonstrated by John Ridley Stroop in 1935: when the name of a colour is printed in a different colour of ink, your brain's reading habit fights your colour perception and answering slows to a crawl. It remains one of psychology's most reliable demonstrations that attention is a skill — and it makes a devilishly good 30-second game.

Each round shows a solid block of colour with a colour's name written across it — and in most rounds that word is printed in a different, misleading ink colour. Your task is to ignore both the word and its ink and click the button that names the block's background colour, choosing from four options. You have 30 seconds: every correct answer is worth 1 point, wrong answers cost you your streak (but never points), and the round changes in under half a second, right or wrong. Your final screen reports correct and wrong counts plus your accuracy.

How to Play Color Matching Game

1

Press Start Game and the 30-second clock begins immediately.

2

Look at the large coloured block and identify its BACKGROUND colour. Deliberately ignore the word printed on it and the colour that word is written in — both are traps in most rounds.

3

Click the button (of four) that names the background colour. The buttons are themselves coloured, so read their labels.

4

Correct answers score 1 point and build your streak; wrong answers reset the streak to zero but do not deduct points. Either way, the next round appears almost instantly.

5

When the clock hits zero you get your correct count, wrong count and accuracy percentage. Press Play Again for another 30 seconds.

Tips & Tricks

  • 💡Say the background colour aloud (or subvocally) the moment the block appears. Forcing your brain through the speech channel breaks the reading reflex that causes Stroop errors.
  • 💡Soften your focus: looking at the block as a wash of colour rather than reading the word keeps the text out of your foveal vision, where reading happens.
  • 💡Answer the buttons by their text, not their fill — the correct button is rarely the same colour as its label, so scan labels quickly in a fixed order (top-left, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-right).
  • 💡Protect the streak mentally but not at the cost of seconds: each round is worth the same 1 point, so a fast recovery after an error beats careful stewing over it.

Color Matching Game — Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly am I supposed to match?+

The background colour of the big block. The word written on the block names some colour and is printed in some ink colour, but the only thing that counts is the block's fill. This version tells you so under the block because the trap confuses everyone at first.

Do wrong answers deduct points?+

No. A wrong answer adds to your Wrong count and resets your current streak to zero, but your score never goes down. Aggressive answering is therefore always the right strategy.

How long is a game and how is the result judged?+

One game lasts 30 seconds. Your final screen shows correct answers, wrong answers and overall accuracy — strong players clear 25+ correct with accuracy above 90%.

Why is this so much harder than it looks?+

That is the Stroop effect: reading is so automatic that your brain processes the word before the colour, and when the two disagree you must actively suppress the word. The game is literally a measure of that suppression speed.
